Community Building

To address complex social problems, we need spaces where individuals from different disciplines, sectors, and backgrounds can actually work together. I’ve been working to create those spaces for students entering the field, for early-career researchers, and for the field as a whole.

IDEAS Summer Institute

I co-founded IDEAS in 2021 and direct the Boston program, which brings undergraduates together for an intensive week with researchers and practitioners across computer science, philosophy, law, and policy. The aim is twofold: early interdisciplinary training in safe and responsible AI, and broadening participation in the field. The program has received generous support from the Omidyar Network and New America’s Public Interest Technology University Network. Here’s an interview about the program.

Seminar Series

I co-founded and continue to co-organize two seminar series that aim to build communities of researchers in nascent fields, and in particular to give early-career researchers a platform.

Computational Social Philosophy Seminars (CSPS). An international online series on research that uses or engages with computational and simulation methods for addressing questions in social philosophy. Its offshoot, CSPAIS, pursues these questions with a focus on AI.

Philosophy of AI Network Talks (PAINT). A bi-weekly online series bringing philosophical work on AI to an international audience, supported by Schmidt Sciences.

The Field

I serve on the steering committee of ACM FAccT (2024–2028), the leading interdisciplinary venue in responsible AI, having been Program Co-chair in 2025, Philosophy Area Chair in 2024, and Tutorials Co-chair in 2023. In these roles I have pushed a big-tent conception of the field, and programming aimed at the non-English and non-Western contexts.

I mentor through the Philosophy of Science Association’s Underrepresented Scholars Mentoring Program, the APA’s job-market mentoring program, and FAccT’s doctoral colloquium. My work building inclusive venues was recognized by the PSA Women’s Caucus Prize Symposium in 2020.
